Description

Alter Egos will focus on exploring the multitude of characters that reside within us. Through drama games we will pursue this process of discovery, and through the artistic mode of filmmaking and/or performance, our alter egos will be manifested and expressed.

In the first class, the focus will be on meeting and greeting, building rapport within the group, and engaging in trust-building theater games. The project of Alter Egos and process are introduced, with examples of videos and correlated artists to provide context such as Cindy Sherman, Pippilotti Rist, and Tim Robinson among others. We will introduce the final assignment of creating a short 1-5 minute performance or film with their chosen alter ego. This will be followed by guiding students through group performance and theater techniques to generate ideas for their pieces. For homework, students are tasked with journaling and coming to the next class with an idea for a piece around their chosen character.

In Class 2, the goal is to further develop group rapport, improvisational, and imaginative skills, as students begin character work, using theater and performance to discover their alter egos. Students will then break into groups to start building pieces based on these alter ego states. Homework involves meeting with group members to discuss and plan their piece for class.

In Class 3, the group continues developing individual and collective theater and performance skills to advance their pieces, with homework focused on working with their groups to refine their work to be performed or screened in the following class.

In Class 4 students will present their final performances of short films or live theater, followed by an appreciation circle, closing activities, and celebration.
