Description

In this special topics course, students will have the opportunity to present, cook, and share their personal recipes with their peers in class. Although, this is not a traditional cooking class or a seminar focused on food in film. Rather, this exploration of the connection between food and cinema takes place within the broader context of art creation, filmmaking practices, and methodology.
Specifically, the goal of this course is to use food as a starting point for reimagining cinema. We will challenge the conventional notion of the proximal senses, often given a humble role in tradition. This will serve as a platform to engage in a thoughtful discussion about why we create, and, for the purposes of this discussion, how the act of cooking and eating, as an aesthetic and multi-sensory experience, can prompt us to not only reconsider the ethics of food but also to rethink the very foundations of the cinematic experience on a broader scale.
The course will examine the process of how a maker imagines, seeks and articulates a certain flavor in their imagemaking. The impetus for this course is to set up a "Filmmaker's Table" where participants come together to prepare and share a meal, while meditating on various aspects of their very own filmmaking process with PLEASURE.
