Description

This course offers a practical and aesthetic introduction to the application of 16mm film projectors in expanded cinema performance and video installation. The workshop-based class encourages students to manipulate film projectors as performing kinetic tools to produce, modify, reconfigure moving images, and explore the projected screen as a form of material presentation. Students will receive instruction on film projector technical operation, projector looping demonstrations, and an exploration of works by relative artists such as Ken Jacobs, Guy Sherwin, Jeanne Liotta, and others. The class also encourages students to adapt pre-existing optical devices (mirror, mylar, prism) to engage with alternative qualities of the moving image. While found film materials will be provided in class, students are welcome to bring their own materials and footage for a more personalized creative experience. Throughout the curriculum, students will be required to create a project that conceives of film as a "live event" through the projection.
