Description
In the early 20th century the term "absolute"
applied to the moving image arose out of an
equivalency with the
term "absolute" as it is applied to music. It its
most direct definition, absolute music is
non-representational,
providing a direct sensual experience transcending
the connotations of extra-musical elements
represented in
program music. We will explore the development of
absolute animation through a series of readings,
screenings,
and discussions. This research will be integrated
with the creation of a series of short exercises
exploring the
concepts and techniques under study. Those
exercises may potentially lead to the realization
of a more fully
developed project.
