Description

In this class students will build an analog
voltage controlled sound synthesizer from scratch
using a do-it-yourself kit. Over the course of
the semester, we will collaboratively construct
the 9 modules that constitute this system
employing standard safe use practices for working
with lead-based solder. We will explore the
electronics behind each circuit, learn the
principles of synthesis, and discover the
fundamental building blocks of sound along the
way. We will also discuss ways of working with
moving images that run parallel to the processes
that govern sound synthesis. Ultimately, we will
build and learn how to play our own instrument,
one that can theoretically make any sound,
articulate any voice.

Students will have solo and small-group
assignments, with a final project that uses the
synthesizer to create an original soundtrack for a
film, video, or expanded cinema performance.
Previous foundational sound production experience
needed.
