Description

This course will explore filmmaking practices
which rely upon and are motivated by long-term
community involvement and activism. Students will
watch films and engage with contemporary fiction
and non-fiction filmmakers in conversations around
social impact, ethics and representation. Many of
the films will incorporate participatory elements
of shared authorship by veteran filmmakers and
first-time filmmakers. As we examine these films,
students will also be required to conduct field
research with a community partner throughout the
semester. Research can be in the form of social
activism, mentoring, volunteering, or some other
form of direct action and/or active dialogue.
Students will be provided a list of local
organizations and nonprofits as potential
collaborators.
