Description

Adaptation is the process of change by which an
organism becomes better suited to its environment.
It is coincidentally, the term used to describe
the process by which one art form - traditionally
the written word - is modified and transformed
into a play, a movie or a film. Moving image
works can in turn be adapted to other media forms.
Through workshops and case studies this class will
explore the complex journey of ideas inspired by
texts, stories, biographies, images and objects,
as they are reshaped from one medium to another.

The class will commence with a series of exercises
to generate ideas and methodologies. Short
assignments will be supplemented with screenings,
readings and analysis. In the second half of the
semester students will apply the techniques
learned to create unique and individual works. The
final project may take the form of a text, a
moving image work, an object, or a performance.

This class is designed for the student who is
ready to experiment, take risks and playfully
engage with the process of adaptation.
