Description

In this workshop class we expand your knowledge
from the fundamentals of cinematography, toward
harnessing the technical tools of the craft for
creating impactful images in advanced productions,
while strengthening your unique voice as an
artist. You will gain fluency working with RED
cameras and introduced to other professional
Digital Cine cameras while creating work
collaboratively. We will explore aesthetic and
blocking concepts working with specific formats,
optics, textures and camera movements, and refine
lighting techniques. Projects you shoot inside and
outside the class will hone your understanding of
the cinematographer's role from pre-production
through post, including the creative use of look
up tables (LUTs) and color grading. Practical work
includes designing dynamic blocking and camera
moves, shooting with multiple cameras and on-set
DIT look management. Visits to vendors (and
possible rental of ARRI Alexa and high-end optics
for in-class shoots) will extend our knowledge
beyond the technical realm of CalArts.
