Description

This class explores alternative, non-linear
methodologies of cinema production-from filming
and editing as a path to writing a script to
shooting dramatic scenes without a screenplay to
constructing characters throughout the entire
production process. The aim of the class is for
students to discover their own processes when
producing their work and feel encouraged to
challenge the conventional, linear mode of
dramatic production: pre-production, production,
post-production.

This course also centers its discussion on the
idea of completion: when is a film a film? Does a
film-a work of art-ever reach completion? This is
all with the goal that students discover which
method of production is more suitable for their
temperament and artistic objectives. Furthermore,
we will approach filmmaking as a holistic craft in
which one person is able to create a cinematic
work from start to finish. The course will
incorporate screenings and discussions that
present a variety of narrative and formal
explorations from filmmakers across the world.
