Description
Editing Aesthetics looks at the post-production
process as an aesthetic practice. We examine
different examples of picture and sound editing
strategies and discuss their potential to produce
meaning in film. Through analyzing different films
and readings the class focuses on editing as a
generative practice - a phase where films are
created too. We discuss key concepts such as time,
space, rhythm, structure, meaning, dialectics,
sequencing, continuity, fragmentation,
immersiveness, among others. Conversations about
the history and politics of editing in film will
be a crucial part of the class, as well as the
ethics of representation on screen. Rather than
workshopping a single project in the class,
students will be asked to complete several editing
assignments that will culminate in a final short
film piece. This piece should investigate one or
multiple editing techniques or theoretical
approaches to editing sound and picture.
