Description

Animation sound uses a combination of dialogue,
effects, and music to complement moving images. A
fair amount has been written about the use of
music in animation, but very little has been
written about the overall role of sound in
animation. Or, how the technological development
of sound recording has influenced the evolution of
the animated film. Or, how the creative language
of sound for hand-crafted images has developed.

This class will, in some ways, be an experiment in
correcting and expanding the historical record,
and creating a coherent narrative of the sometimes
uneasy alliance between picture and sound in
animation. As technology has changed, each studio
and filmmaker has adapted more or less
independently.
