Description
Super 8 film is a compact, portable cinematic medium ideal for spontaneous and intimate image making. With its smaller sized cameras and overall ease of use, Super 8 facilitates an easily accessible, tactile, expressive, and personal relationship with analog filmmaking.
In this hands-on, workshop style class, students will engage with Super 8, both creatively and technically. We will cover the basics of planning and shooting analog film, guiding each student through the process of preparing, shooting, and hand developing their own roll of black and white Super 8 film using a lower toxicity, "home brewed" developer called Caffenol. Students will learn how to mix and handle Caffenol using easily available household ingredients.
This course emphasizes the materiality of analog mediums, giving students a deeper understanding of the physical properties of moving images and their potential for expressive manipulation.
