BFA Requirements:

To complete a BFA, an undergraduate must complete the courses listed below by year level:

  • Undergraduate Critique two times (suggested completion in 2nd and 3rd year)

  • AAIC300 Visual Semiotics (suggested completion in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year)

  • At least 6 *elective courses within the Photography and Media program as defined below (suggested completion in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year)

*An elective course is defined as having a course prefix of APHM within the following curriculum categories: Lecture/Practice, Lecture/Studio, Lecture/Discussion, Group Project, Critique, or Seminar.

Technical courses/workshops, Production, Studio only and Lab courses fall under the technical requirements and are not eligible for elective course credit.

First Year 

Required Courses:

  • APHM101 and APHM102 Foundation Seminar and Critique

  • APHM-103 New Lab

  • APHM-110A Beginning Analog Photography

  • One technical workshop from the APHM-100 A-Z series or a technical course from APHM110 A-Z series

  • AAIC-310 History of Photography

  • Art Hazards workshop (AART010) and a second workshop of your choice during Winter Session

Second Year 

Required Courses:

  • APHM201 Undergraduate Seminar

  • APHM305 Undergraduate Critique

  • One technical workshop from the APHM-100 A-Z series or a technical course from APHM110 A-Z series

  • Two elective courses (APHM)

  • Two Winter Session workshops

Third Year 

Required Courses:

  • APHM305 Undergraduate Critique

  • *Realize/Show a Mid-Residency project developed in consultation with the mentor.

  • One technical workshop from the APHM-100 A-Z series or a technical course from APHM110 A-Z series

  • Two elective courses (APHM)

  • Two Winter Session workshops

*Third Year Presentation Requirement:

The Mid-Residency project occurs in the fall semester of the 3rd year or spring semester of the 3rd year for transfer students.

Fourth Year 

Required Courses:

  • *A final thesis project or exhibition developed in consultation with the mentor

  • APHM415 Critique and Exit (second semester) 

  • APHM499 Independent Study (one each semester)

  • One technical workshop from the APHM-100 A-Z series or a technical course from APHM110 A-Z series

  • Two elective courses (APHM)

  • APHM497 BFA4 Independent Studio during Winter Session

*Fourth Year Presentation Requirement:

The Final Thesis project or Exhibition occurs during the final semester.
