Arts Education Concentration Learning Outcomes

As a result of participating in the Arts Education concentration a student will be able to:

  1. Develop a personal teaching philosophy based on their artistic practice that cultivates cultural and linguistic relevance, equity, and inclusivity.

  2. Apply contemporary theories of learning within the arts from a critical perspective toward practical aspects of teaching.

  3. Identify learning differences based on age, developmental levels, ability, and mental health, and differentiate teaching style and materials appropriately.

  4. Recognize the applications, affordances, and challenges of technology in youth development and in teaching in arts learning contexts.

  5. Demonstrate skills in course planning, syllabus development, assignment and assessment design, and classroom management.

Arts Education Concentration Requirements

Students are required to complete 15 units in classes approved for credit towards the concentration: three required foundation courses (9 units) and two electives (6 units). A teaching portfolio, where students reflect on their development as future educators, serves as the capstone for the program.

Graduate students may petition the Arts Education Coordinator for exceptions and substitutions as aligns to their academic and career goals. This may include taking the same elective multiple times (e.g. ArtPilot) or aligning courses to a particular teaching focus (e.g. post secondary). Graduate students seeking exceptions are encouraged to open this discussion as early in their CalArts program as possible to make sure they can reach their goals with available courses.
