Description

Throughout this studio class, we'll attempt to deconstruct the relationship between listening to music and painting as practice. Visual artists have always been influenced by music. Some show the specific influences of music in their work, like Corita Kent or Dave Muller. Others, like Jack Whitten, credit music as a motivation for ideas, concepts, and feelings in their paintings.
In some ways, maintaining a painting studio practice is an isolated existence. Many hours are spent alone with one's work, thoughts, and decisions concerning fluid mediums. Music can be an accomplice in this endeavor; it can inspire movement, entice action, or simply support with a warm atmosphere. During this class, each student will be asked to work on paintings in the classroom, complete readings, and create a playlist or select an album for our weekly painting sessions. These weekly music selections will be accompanied by a brief presentation by the student/selector.
