Introduction to North Indian Ragas

The purpose of this course is to learn to be fluent as well as notate in sargam (solfege) through a combination of vocal paltas/alankars (exercises), composition, and analytical listening. Sargam is the language at the core of all vocal and instrumental music, and the key to learning any language is immersion in it. We will explore the music across a variety of ragas (melodic modes) and talas (rhythmic cycles). The material will be set to both Sargam and traditional wording such as hindi, sanskrit and percussive syllables such as Tarana.
