After a long period of marginalization, the interest in using craft methodologies in contemporary art practices has surged in recent years. This course will provide students with an inclusive framework from which to consider the use of traditional craft processes in creating art that explores issues relevant to students today. Throughout the term, we will work hands-on with media such as ceramics, paper making/ paper sculpture, dyeing with natural materials, soft sculpture/ quilting.

This course will introduce students to traditional and contemporary craft practices through the process of making, looking, reading, writing. We will learn about historical precedents and concepts such as Mingei, "Sloppy Craft", Minimalism, etc via discussions, readings, and slide presentations. Students will work with various sculptural techniques including ceramic slab and coil building, natural dyes, quilting/ Soft sculpture, and papermaking. Critical thinking, creativity and experimentation are encouraged.
