FS - Fall & Spring

This course will explore the realm of earth materials as an art material from the perspective of environmental justice. We will consider the dichotomy of judgement between that which we call dirt versus soil, as well as related topics such as extraction, pollution, waste, live earth and ceramic clay. Visits to various sites through the term, including industrially impacted zones, will be supplemented by readings and films. We will get our hands dirty both through volunteer work and making art directly with or inspired by these earthen elements.
