Graduate Lighting Design I - Theatrical
Techniques
A detailed exploration of the lighting design
process, and the development of a conceptual and
collaborative approach to design and
communication. Students will be assigned a
variety of projects, both in theatre and dance
(based on past or current professional
productions) that will develop and strengthen
skills in technique and the ability to form,
articulate and organize strong and coherent
lighting ideas that serve the material in a
unique and compelling way. Students will be
introduced to design techniques for a variety of
venues, including proscenium, arena, thrust, and
non-traditional spaces. The course will include
an extensive examination of color theory, optics
and photo-metrics, light observations, and an
exploration of the application of light in
related media, such as painting, photography and
cinema.
