Description
One of the most ancient forms of theater, shadow
puppetry has been an essential form historiÂcally
in both ritual and secular theater. Shadow
theater has also played an important role in the
modern theater, from the legendary Chat Noir
performances in Paris, to the continually
evolving Indonesian Wayang, to the works of
contemporary avant-garde artists. This course
will explore the medium of shadows through
in-class viewings of theater, film,
visual/installation art, photography, and graphic
design that utilize
shadow forms in evocative and imaginative ways.
Students will work on individual and
collaborative projects that explore a variety of
approaches to the theatrical use of shadows.
There may be additional fees associated with this
course for supplies, books, or other materials.
