Description

One of the most ancient forms of theater, shadow
puppetry has been an essential form historically
in both ritual and secular theater. Shadow
theater has also played an important role in the
20th century, from the legendary Chat Noir
performances in Paris, to the continually
evolving Indonesian Wayang, to the works of
contemporary avant-garde artists, both in theater
and the visual arts. This course will explore the
medium of shadows through in-class viewings of
theater, film, visual/installation art,
photography, and graphic design that utilize
shadow forms in evocative and imaginative ways.
Students will work on individual and
collaborative projects that explore a variety of
approaches to the theatrical use of shadows.
