Description
This workshop will guide students build their own fully realized, fictional world (complete with characters and setting) from the primordial ooze of their imaginations. The goal will be to produce a small zine or mini-comic that describes the rules, characters (if there are any), tone, and environment of this world. Sort of like a bible.
World building can be useful for artists interested in game design, pitching a tv show or movie, graphic novels, Dungeons and Dragons; the applications are infinite! Students will study and compare notable artists' constructed realities as disparate as Henry Darger's Vivian Girls and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is freedom in terms of narrative style and tone; the artist's universe can be character driven, or focused entirely on something abstract. As long as the built world feels like its own distinct "reality" with its own rules and style. Attendance at all sessions required.
