Description
Drawing is a kind of language, a method of thought and expression. It consists of a mark or line, typically against a blank page, but perhaps on a screen or in the larger world. Artists use drawing to work out an idea, or to analyze a problem. They use it as an activity to open up the imagination, or as an activity to explore the limits of a material. They use it to prepare an artwork, or consider it an artwork in its own right. This class will explore all these possibilities, perhaps more. We will practice some basic skills, and explore a variety of more advanced approaches.
This is a studio class, so students will be expected to make drawings. To facilitate that, we will meet for 6 hours, every other week. During class time we will consider the drawings of some contemporary artists and work through various exercises and assignments. Students will also be developing a portfolio of drawings to share at the end of the semester, in class or in one of the Art School galleries. There will be a fee to cover materials.
