Description
Expanding and ideating within the cohort, FOREVER STUDENT: Art MFA2+ is a support system and a discussion forum to address expectations, practices, and goals. This elective course centers on frank dialogue, discovery, methods, experimentation, and shared best practices for both individual and community wellness in the final semester *and beyond* for the CalArts Art MFA2.
This course offers guidance for pacing in the final months toward the grad project while opening to the potency of future building. We will utilize open and critical approaches to "professionalization" while thinking with *and beyond* market-focused, opaque, and unrealistic art-market strategies. We will move with, reconsider, or shift processes, procedures, expectations, and/or outcomes. This course examines multi-faceted approaches to hot topics including, but not restricted to: "art world & world-world relations", expectations, relationship building, shared &/ or individual concerns/fears/needs, identifying and extending resources, sustainable skill-building practices, working as an artist assistant or gallery installer (or...), preparing for "big" decisions, and more.
Further, we will ask how to expand our notions of collaboration, collectivity, trade/barter systems, financial pools, start-ups or pop-ups, skill and tool shares, and vital correspondence practices. By studying myriad approaches to the studio and our creative lives, we experiment with writing, archival practices, and field outreach; discuss sustainable material practices, studio maintenance, alternative practices and/or materials; and more. We will describe and speculate on keywords such as success, emergence, competition, wellness, boredom, and failure. We will discuss change, pivots, breaks, audience, collectors and collecting, ideas surrounding maturation, and the rich space of intergenerational dialogue.
FOREVER STUDENT course will also dovetail as a support system for early concept-building and goal-setting for the Calarts All-Art School Post-Grad Show to assist, envision, and contribute to the shape of the large group exhibition culture. This is a chance to pregame the Art MFA cohort's early exploration and research: instigating curator research, and/or identifying goals, sites, outcomes, marketing, media, including alternatives and more (- or less.)
We will likely visit the REEF for support + resourcing. Includes other potential group-defined field trips & interactions with active artists in the field, i.e., local Los Angeles, national, or international artist practitioners: grad peers, alumni, friends.
Post-MFA life (real and imagined) will include traditional and non-traditional approaches, strategies, debates, dreaming, and wish lists.
