Description
This course will serve as an introduction to
various concepts of musical time and rhythm, as
viewed from the perspective of music theory and
music psychology. Computer science research on the
nature of rhythm perception will also be
discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on
issues raised by compositional developments in
late twentieth-century music, as demonstrated in
the music of Gérard Grisey, Louis Andriessen,
Laurie Anderson, Steve Coleman, Henry Threadgill,
Elliot Carter, and Michael Finnissy, among many
others. Students will be required to read and
critically examine scholarly articles, participate
in rhythmic exercises in class, and develop new
methods for evaluating rhythm perception in
musicians and non-musicians alike.
