Description
Just Intonation Practicum is a course for performers to learn and explore practical understandings and approaches to just intonation as well as alternative microtonality vocabulary. We will explore approaches based on sonic vocabulary, instrumental structures, and acoustic underpinnings, as well as through existing and new repertoire.
While the primary focus will be on Just Intonation, larger issues of microtonal performance practice and the effects of individual instrumental inharmonicity will also be explored. Available assistive softwares, including the Hayward Tuning Vine, will be an integral part of in-class work, allowing students to develop an understanding of available tools and resources.
Additionally the class will involve a thorough exploration of existing notation systems and how to navigate them as a performer.
