Description
In this class we will examine the profoundly
influential and experimental works of John Cage
through the performance and discussion of pieces
chosen by the class's participants. The often
idiosyncratic elements of Cagean performance
practice will be addressed through weekly
coachings, and a final concert of the works will
be presented. Concepts to be addressed might
include the realization of indeterminate
compositional elements, execution of proportional
notation, piano preparation/bowing, graphic score
interpretation, various uses of electronics,
lecture performance, multimedia performance, etc.
The cultural context and general aesthetics of
Cage's work will also be explored through various
readings and discussion of pieces performed.
Performers of non-western and electronic
instruments are encouraged to participate.
This class is designed for students who are fluent
in reading musical notation.
