Description

Can an analysis of musical techniques interact with an analysis of whether social and political goals are effectively communicated in a piece of music? When is music effective politically and when is it not? Can overt political goals compromise musical effectiveness? Can they strengthen musical effectiveness? How do exogenous goals effect Music Composition in different styles and genres?

In this course we will ask these questions and more as we examine political music from different genres including, pop, experimental concert music, opera, folk music, commercial music, and other styles.

Students will be encouraged to make their own explorations and discoveries, and they will be expected to form their own analytically supported opinions.
