Description

In Bali or Java the Gamelan Orchestra, specially
the most modern gamelan, is known for having a
colorful orchestration and for its musical
vitality, complex musical structures, and
rhythmic complexity. The modern gamelan orchestra
in Bali is known as the Gamelan Gong Kebyar, and
in Java is called Gamelan Seprangkat. These
gamelans can be used for many different types
ceremonial events, and then can also accompany a
variety of dances, dance drama, and theater. For
this Winter Session, three of us in the
Indonesian Music and Dance Program, Djoko Walujo,
Nanik Wenten and Nyoman Wenten are going to
collaborate to teach classes and workshops to
emphasize the use of of the gamelan pieces for
the accompaniment of dances.
