Opera AND ___: Exploring Intersections

20th and 21st Century Opera's intersections with
the musical and extra-musical. 20th and 21st
century opera is "Opera AND ________." Opera has a
variety of possible musical and non-musical
intersections which we will explore this semester.
Each week will focus on a different intersection
with opera. Some of the topics we will address
are: opera AND feminism, politics, sociology,
experimentalism, technology, popular music,
philosophy, hermeneutics, world music, important
20th and 21st century musical styles, etc. A short
history of opera also will be included.
Prerequisites: MTHY-111 Theory A OR permission of
instructor
