Description

Students will immerse themselves in historical
aspects of the resistance movement of the 1960s
and 1970s as it relates to folk music and its
intersection with afropunk and other elements of
early rock and roll. The themes are futurism,
androgyny and rock opera as seen through the lens
of David Bowie's collected works. Students will
participate in a faculty-directed ensemble to
establish best practices for applied harmony,
arranging, melodic improvisation and collaborative
recording while exploring the social impact that
comes from the marriage of social activism and
song. This class will interface with the Project
Recording class over the course of the semester to
arrange and realize professionally-recorded
repertory and collaborative material as well as a
live performance.
