Description
Open to students throughout the institute, this
interdisciplinary course explores holistic
approaches to music making, artificial
intelligence, and data interpretation, led by
composer and musician Derrick Skye and writer,
speaker, and musician Kenric Allado-McDowell along
with AI language model GPT-3. // How can we use AI
to create a model for generative music, and how
can that model work with living, breathing
musicians and composers to include vocabulary from
a variety of musical cultures? // The class will
approach this question through both theoretical
and historical background, and hands-on
experience. Students will learn about the history
of AI and data analysis, an introduction to
neuroscience behind the measurement of brainwaves,
and implications for music as a tool for healing.
They will also perform hands-on work to interpret
pre-existing EEG behavioral data, and to collect
new data through recording a variety of ensembles
from different musical cultures at CalArts.
