Description

This is an intensive film and video viewing course
focusing on major works from the history of
avant-garde, or experimental, film. The majority
of titles will be selected from CalArts' film and
video archive, including special film prints that
have not been or rarely have been shown on campus.
We will watch several long-form films and videos
that depend on extended duration and sustained
concentration, but important short work will also
be shown. If possible, additional titles will be
rented to extend an appreciation of an filmmaker's
work or milieu. Artists being considered include
Vito Acconci, Chantal Akerman, Thom Andersen, Stan
Brakhage, Betzy Bromberg, Charles Burnett,
Nathaniel Dorksy, Kevin Jerome Everson, Hollis
Frampton, Su Friedrich, Ken Jacobs, Kurt Kren,
Gunvor Nelson, Carolee Schneemann, Harry Smith,
Michael Snow, Phil Solomon, Joyce Wieland and
Frederick Wiseman. Students will be asked to keep
a weekly journal and write one seven-page paper.
