Description

This course is a beginner Pilates-reformer class
with a focus on mindfulness, breathwork,
inclusivity, dynamic stretching and strengthening.
The central goal of the class is to
empower students in the CalArts School of Dance to
learn how to use Pilates as a form of
effective cross-training that supports the
longevity and sustainability of their careers.
Throughout the semester the course will cover the
"core principles" of Pilates that will help
students breathe better, live with less pain,
prevent and rehabilitate from injuries, improve
posture and move more efficiently. The course does
not require prior experience, and will
teach students how to safely practice Pilates on
Balanced Body Reformers.
Over the course of the semester, students will
learn Pilates reformer exercises that will help
them increase strength and flexibility, improve
alignment, increase coordination, and have
a stronger overall awareness of their body and
movement habits. In concert with the work
on the reformer, students will learn additional
techniques from The Franklin Method,
Alexander Technique, and fascial work to add to
their dancers tool-belt for muscle release,
more efficient stretching, strategies for warming
up and cooling down, and building their
personal cross training practice.
