Description

This course engages in the study of Hip Hop/Street dance including but not limited to breaking, social dances, popping, locking and house ranging from the 1970s to the present within African diasporic communities. Through understanding the dances' cultural identities, innovators and pioneers, students will then learn vocabulary, foundation, anatomy and behavior characteristics. Through movement practice, corresponding assignments via documentaries, readings, music, videos, and class discussions, students will develop a well rounded perspective on the ever evolving culture of Hip Hop/Street dance. As students progress through the course, their solid base will enable them to build a more developed, experimental and stylistic aesthetic in their own movement practice.
