historical perspective, modern dance artists will
be examined. Through video viewing, readings,
writings and discussion, students will gain a
critical perspective on the aesthetic and
philosophical contributions of the primary
artists within this tradition. Attention to
movement vocabulary, style and artistic interests
and trends will provide perspective on the
artistic landscape in which we as contemporary
artists are working. This is a year-long course,
though students may register for each semester
independently. The fall semester focuses on the
emergence of modern dance from ballet, through
the 1940's. The spring semester begins with the
primary choreographers of the 1950's and
continues to the present.
