Description

The course introduces economic history by looking into important moments and powerful processes that have created the modern urban environment. A historicized perspective on our times comes into view by focusing on moments of economic transformation, crisis, and debate. This course reads dispatches from and about critical moments in the development of the modern city and considers them in consort with illustrative artworks. In this class, we will start with pre-industrial city-states, England at the dawn of Industrialization and the triangular trade, fin de siecle Paris for the experience of modernization, the long 20th Century (WWI & the end of laissez-faire, the end of Bretton Woods, decolonization, the end of the cold war), and both sides of the Northern Pacific in our current moment of crisis and transition.
