Description
Observing Ourselves: An Introduction to the Study
of Human Cultures
This course is an introduction to cultural
anthropology which brings a global comparative
perspective to the study of human beings. We will
compare and contrast cultural practices related to
language, food, family structures, gender and
sexuality, politics, economics, supernaturalism,
illness and healing, and more. Through a
combination of lectures, films, assigned readings
and in-class activities, we will explore and
challenge the assumptions that we all hold about
what is "natural," "normal" and "true." Students
will also participate in a field study of the
CalArts community, applying anthropological
concepts and methodologies learned in the course.
