Long Form Fiction Workshop: Writing Very Long
Stories, Novellas, and Novels
This course will focus on writing longer forms of
fiction. We will read a selection of longer
stories, novellas and at least one novel as a way
of thinking about what makes longer work
effective and what the pitfalls are of trying to
write it. We will pay special attention to form,
to what longer fiction can achieve that shorter
fiction can, and to style. Each participant will
regularly turn in work for critique, and the goal
of the class is to write several longer stories,
or one novella, or part of a novel.
Students should expect to spend approx. $50 on
books and supplies.
