Description
This is a one- to two-week course focused on the
MFA in Creative Writing Program's Katie Jacobson
Writer in Residence. The Residency underscores
the experimental ethos of the Program, and covers
critical genre-, community- and process-based
methods, approaches and concerns influencing
interdisciplinary literary arts practice today, as
well as a range of topics related to activism,
professionalization and innovation in the field.
In this way, the Residency contributes to
discourses and activities related to the Program's
Writing + Its Publics concentration. Students are
required to attend a public critical lecture and a
creative reading by the Writer in Residence both
at CalArts and at REDCAT, as well as other events
related to the Residency. Course requirements
include intensive reading, preparation of critical
observations, frameworks, prompts and/or lines of
inquiry related to Resident writing and research,
and a final critical reflection. Previous Writers
in Residence: Lydia Davis, Samuel R. Delany,
George Saunders, Edwidge Danticat, Junot Diaz,
Kevin Young and John Keene.
