Description
This course theorizes the connections between art, aesthetics, and politics in the contemporary world. Students will explore how institutions, mediums, and technologies shape our understanding of what art is and can be. With readings from key theorists and exposure to a range of art forms-including visual, sound, performance, and digital-this class pushes you to question conventional notions of art, its valuation, and its political import. Topics include Investigative Aesthetics, Institutional Critique, Site-Specific Art, Embodiment, Sound and Noise, AI Art, and Net Art.
With regular assignments and a final project, this course aims to challenge and expand your understanding of aesthetic theory in the 21st century. Ideal for students interested in art theory, political theory, and anyone keen to explore the evolving landscape of contemporary aesthetics.
Students will develop techniques of deep reading, descriptive art writing, and presenting at a graduate level. Expect 50-100 pages of difficult reading per week.
