Description

ArtSpeak 4B is a reading/writing course designed
for MFA students and upper-level BFA students that
focuses on the conventions of critical writing and
reading practices in a North American classroom
setting. The course is designed to support
multilingual students with the cultural-linguistic
requirements of graduate-level study in art and
design. Both a craft workshop and an opportunity
for 1-on-1 mentoring, this class will explore the
considerable overlap that learning English as an
additional language shares with art/design by
considering both as sites of communication.
Beginning with what you already know about
English, we will pursue the needs of specific
writing, research, and art projects from other
classes at CalArts, and cultivate sustainable
habits of self-editing, organization, idea
development, clarity, concision, communication,
and critical thinking-all with the shared
assumption that, as international artists and
multilingual speakers, your distinct backgrounds,
experiences, and bases of knowled e are assets
that help inform your art practice and education.
