Description

Using an intersectional feminist lens, we will
explore how writers and artists navigate
relationships between writing, identity, culture,
politics and art making. We will ask, how might
feminist poetics be a strategy for envisioning and
re-visioning language use, forms and ideas? How is
feminist poetics a mode of critique, desire,
invention, inquiry, and imaginative literary
praxis? How is feminist poetics a way of writing
visions of resistance and transformation?

Rather than beginning our study with the
statement, "Feminist Poetics is.," our class will
build a collective understanding from the texts we
engage with and from reflections on our own
creative work.

Together, we will read in and across genres. We'll
read book-length works, poems, essays, statements
of poetics, workbooks, prompts, provocations, and
interviews. We'll also listen to podcasts, watch
videos, and hear from guests who share about their
work and commitments. Creative writing workshops
are a central component to our class. Students are
invited to share their own writing and respond to
their peers' work. Our creative spirit will be
generative and process-based, inviting you to
experiment with writing strategies and goals.
