Description
In this course, we will dive into Latin American
and Latinx literature and art in the surreal,
magical, gothic traditions. This course will
introduce you to the historical and cultural
contexts in which these traditions flourished.
Exploring this together, we ask how they may shed
a new uncanny light onto our own lives today.
Through readings, discussion, creative and
essay-writing assignments and a research project,
we will listen to voices and stories that narrate
lives and events. We will also get to question how
the act of storytelling in itself brings forth new
dimensions of reality that seem to exist beyond
the actuality of our lived experience but
nevertheless are embedded within it. In light of
this, we will investigate how these fictive
imaginings of the unknown construct meaning for us
today and what this meaning is.
