Description
Considering the relationship of the camera and
documentation to live and body-based art, this
course presents a critical survey of contemporary
sculpture, installation, and performance as
understood through its written, photographic,
video, and/or audio documentation. We will
consider the role of photography and other
recorded media within contexts of history,
posterity, mythmaking, and the social conditions
that determine who (and what) is deemed worthy of
being remembered. Students will be required to
produce and present a work and/or documentation in
response to themes that unfold throughout the
semester. Artists we'll consider include: Regina
José Galindo, Rafa Esparza, Sebastian Hernandez,
William Pope.L, Alvin Baltrop, Elle Perez,
Ja'Tovia Gary, Autumn Knight, Adrian Piper, Sophie
Calle, Francis Alys, Ragnar Kjartansson, Jason
Moran, Wilmer Wilson IV.
