Description

"We are the Ones We are Waiting For: Abolition and
Spaces of Dissent" is an open form class where we
will explore contemporary abolitionist discourse,
pandemic and activist media landscapes, and
momentary spaces for celebration, daydreaming and
dissent. Starting with the changes in space, time
and media during today's pandemic, its shutdowns
and lockdowns, catastrophe and protests, we will
study the new and powerful things that have become
possible. Through individual and group research,
readings, screenings, and visiting lecturers, we
will explore things that have come of this moment
in history: its images, its critiques of policing
and social control, and new imaginaries and
futures that until recently seemed unthinkable.
This class will primarily be online; small group
meetings will take place where they are possible.
Students will be encouraged to find connections
between their own artwork and the class materials,
but this will not be required. Additional course
outcomes will be arrived at during the course
through discussion.
