Description

The experiences of those from subjugated
populations are as dynamic and richly layered as
any other group, however the representations and
narratives ascribed to these communities are
oftentimes rooted only in suffering. While pain
and struggle are critical responses to oppression,
joy and leisure are necessary counteractions to
it.

This course will consider amusement, recreation,
joy, and leisure as forms of resistance within
oppressive social systems. Through lecture,
discussion, and field trips, we will work through
questions pertaining to free time, relaxation, and
escapism-Who is afforded it and at what cost? From
art galleries and museums to public pools and
national parks, we will examine how gaining access
to these spaces and simply enjoying ourselves can
be effective in moving toward social equity.
