Description

Students will choose a site on campus to design
and build (using mostly cast off construction
materials) a temporary structure/installation.
After reviewing and discussing the student design
proposals we will collectively decide on the basic
concept, design, and collaborate on further
developing the project. Some aspects of
development will include scale, form/s, texture,
light and pattern, accessibility, site engagement,
activation, material use and distribution,
stability, structural and aesthetic connections
and material transitions, etc...
As a multidisciplinary collaboration, the class as
a whole will build the final
structure/installation.

We will discuss a selection of artists,
designers and topics including; Gordon
Matta-Clark, Dennis Oppenheim, Alison Knowles,
Sarah Oppenheimer, Nancy Holt, Noah Purifoy, Hague
Yang, Andrea Zittel, Buckminster Fuller, Chris
Burden, JB Blunk, Liz Glynn, Rafa Esparza, Beatriz
Cortez, Frederick Kiesler, Simone Leigh, Bauhaus,
the intersection of art and architecture, ritual
use of spaces, functionalist and vernacular
architecture, design and engineering standards,
spatial design, modular building, sustainable
building materials and methods, sympathetic
architecture, form light shadow studies, the
politics of public space, and gendered spaces.

This class will function entirely collaboratively,
meaning skill/knowledge sharing is a must and
attendance and participation in all classes is
mandatory.
