Description

CalArts Collaborates: Design for Non-Profit
Partners
In this year-long elective, students will partner
with a non-profit organization to create a series
of projects that address an urgent social or
political issue based on a prompt from the
organization. Working in teams from the School of
Art and the School of Film/Video, students will
respond to a prompt and create an innovative set
of outcomes / forms of audience engagement and
communication that address a young, global
audience. Outcomes are open-ended and may span a
range of platforms and media (ie short live-action
or animated public service announcements, social
media/web presences, wearables, maps, workshops,
posters, etc.). Final outcomes will be produced in
actual scale / length and media.

Students will conduct research, present proposals,
and develop prototypes of all visual and material
outcomes. They will create a production schedule
and work within a budget. Students will present
their work to the faculty, members of the
non-profit organization, and other members of the
CalArts community. The course may also offer the
option for international travel in June to present
final outcomes.

This is the first semester of a year-long course.
To receive credit, students are expected to enroll
in the Spring semester of the course as well. The
emphasis of each session is as follows:
Fall semester: research, proposals, and project
development.
Spring semester: final production, presentations
and showing / exhibition, possible option for
international travel.
