Description

This course will explore love as a source of
guidance and nurture for the artist who makes. It
will begin with the proposition that love is a
philosophy with the capacity to transform stagnant
and dire social and material realities, while also
undertake an examination of how love has been
co-opted by capitalism, disregarded as unnecessary
by pop culture, made to be silly by academia, and
socially reduced to a phenomena that can only
happen within the couple form or nuclear family
unit. Students will also become familiar with
works of art and social movements that center/ed
love or the qualities of love as a primary medium
or theme for their making. And students will
collectively contemplate and critically analyze
love's potential and its ability to hold up
against their own socio-political realities of
making new things and a new world to accompany the
things they make.
